Menopause Counselling
What Is Menopause?
All women should feel listened to and supported through the menopause – none of us should struggle alone.
Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life when her periods stop, her ovaries stop releasing eggs, and her oestrogen levels fall, leading to the end of natural fertility. It typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 (the average age for menopause is 51), and can be triggered by the removal of ovaries, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy.
While people use ‘menopause’ to describe a phase of time when periods become irregular and menopause symptoms appear, it actually refers to a specific day when you’ve gone twelve consecutive months without a menstrual period.
The transition phase leading up to menopause, known as perimenopause, can start earlier and continue beyond the menopause stage, bringing a host of other symptoms with it.
Perimenopause refers to when the functioning of your ovaries gradually slows down over time, which leads to menopause. This phase can last anywhere from a few months to several years.
During perimenopause, you might notice lighter or irregular periods and experience symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, brain fog, and fatigue. It’s easy to overlook these symptoms and attribute them to everyday stress, so it often takes women some time to realise what they are experiencing.
