Marital Counselling

What Is Marital Counselling?

Marriage is a lifelong commitment and the ultimate example of teamwork and companionship between two people who have chosen to build a life together. However, modern couples face a myriad of marriage stressors, from differences in child-rearing preferences to extended family dynamics and financial concerns to competing personal priorities.

Marital Counselling helps couples in Singapore looking to strengthen their relationship, resolve differences amicably, and improve their communication for a healthy partnership. By addressing underlying issues, you and your partner can rebuild trust, address conflicts constructively, and enhance mutual support and intimacy, all in a qualified counsellor’s supportive, impartial presence.

At New Leaf Counselling, our Marital Counselling services help you and your partner navigate the challenges of married life.  With the guidance of an impartial professional, you can speak openly about your innermost thoughts and develop practical solutions to difficult situations.

Marital Counselling focuses on emotional reconnection and the rediscovery of shared goals, revitalising the relationship and bringing focus back to your partnership. By deepening your understanding of one another, Marital Counselling helps you build resilience to future disagreements and challenges.

At New Leaf, our certified counsellors focus on restoring respect and admiration within relationships without intruding or imposing. They meet you where you are and deliver bespoke guidance and counselling based on the challenges you bring to each session.

Our counsellors use evidence-based methods such as the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, Prepare/Enrich, Family Systems Therapy, and Internal Family Systems, among others. How Is The Gottman Method Used In Marriage and Relationship Therapy?

Conflict is a part of any relationship, and how couples navigate these conflicts can determine the state of their relationship together. In his research, Gottman noted that couples who ended up separating exhibited certain behaviours that he calls the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” These were:

1. Criticisms of the partner’s personality, especially over perceived negative traits.
2. Defensiveness when criticised for something, warding off a perceived “attack”.
3. Stonewalling, or refusing to interact with the other and preventing meaningful communication.
4. Contempt, such as making statements from a relative position of superiority.

Gottman also finds that marital conflicts are generally divided into two categories: resolvable and perpetual. Per their research, 69% of marital conflicts are perpetual problems, so the Gottman Method intends to help couples work through these together with a calm mind and consideration for each other’s feelings.
As such, the Gottman Method can be instrumental in helping couples work through many relationship issues, including frequent arguments, emotional distancing, and more. Even for couples in healthy relationships, the Gottman Method can be valuable in allowing them to understand each other better at any stage of their relationship.

What Is The Gottman Method?

The Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, developed by Drs John and Julie Gottman is a highly effective, evidence-based approach grounded in over 40 years of rigorous research with more than 3,000 couples.

This method, proven to improve relationship satisfaction and long-term outcomes, offers hope and optimism for couples seeking to strengthen their bond.

It focuses on three core pillars of healthy, thriving partnerships:

  • Nurturing friendship and connection.
  • Managing conflict in constructive ways.
  • Building shared meaning and purpose.

At New Leaf, we use this research-backed framework to help couples enhance communication, rebuild trust, and deepen emotional intimacy, laying a solid foundation for a meaningful and enduring relationship.
