Grief is the process of coping with loss. While you may associate grief with the death of a loved one, it can also arise from any event that disrupts our sense of normalcy or identity, including the loss of relationships or connections that shape who we are.
Grief is a profound and sometimes overwhelming emotion. It can leave you feeling numb and disconnected from your daily routines, and impede your ability to perform regular tasks. As a natural response to loss, grief is both a universal and deeply personal experience, with symptoms varying greatly between people who process loss in different ways.
Grief is a complex, non-linear emotion that surfaces in waves over time, which sometimes makes people feel they aren’t “making progress” with their healing.
With time and the right support, you may find your grief becomes less overwhelming and more manageable. This doesn’t mean you’ve “moved on” or forgotten anything, but simply that you’ve learned to live with this new emotion and re-engage with life after the loss. You may still have tough or low days, but you can get to a place where your grief won’t prevent you from carrying on with daily life.
At New Leaf, our Grief Counselling services offer a safe and empathetic environment for those coping with loss in Singapore.
Our experienced and compassionate counsellors guide you through the difficult emotions and stages of grief, helping you navigate the healing process on your own terms and offering long-term support as you adjust to life after loss.
Grief is a highly personal experience, and everyone processes loss differently. Our goal is to offer a safe and supportive space for you, no matter what you’re going through, and to address your grief with sensitivity and compassion. We emphasise experiential approaches, as we believe grief and loss are closely linked to our physical experiences. However, we also incorporate both talk and non-verbal therapies to guide you through your healing process.
Our counsellors are experienced in supporting clients through grief, and use a range of techniques to help manage emotions tied to loss. These include Brain Spotting (BS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems, and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), along with other therapeutic approaches. Don’t worry if you aren’t familiar with these – your counsellor will explain any modalities they include in your bespoke treatment plan so you know what to expect.
Grief counselling helps you navigate and process the complex emotions that come with loss. You may be feeling the lowest you’ve ever felt, or desolate and hopeless about the future after loss. Counselling provides a supportive environment where you can express yourself, develop coping strategies, and rebuild your life.
Grief counselling helps you better understand grief, provides a safe space to express your feelings, teaches you new coping skills, and guides you to slowly accept the reality of your loss.
It’s natural to question whether grief counselling is worth the effort when things feel so permanently broken and “unfixable.” The short answer is: yes, it is. Research shows that while some can manage grief without professional help, experiencing loss is associated with mental and physical health challenges that can be addressed through working with a counsellor.
