GI-MAP™ Test
What Is The GI-MAP™ Test?
The GI-MAP™ (Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus) is a comprehensive stool analysis that uses quantitative PCR (qPCR) to evaluate microbial DNA in the gastrointestinal tract from a single stool sample. This advanced molecular method measures the levels of gut bacteria, parasites, viruses, fungi, and other markers to help you and your practitioner understand your gut ecosystem in detail.
Unlike traditional culture-based tests, the GI-MAP can detect and quantify difficult-to-culture organisms, such as strict anaerobes and viral agents. This provides a more accurate and functional picture of your gut microbiome.
This test is offered through Nordic Laboratories.

What The GI-MAP™ Test Measures?
The test evaluates a broad range of markers, including:
Microbial DNA
- Pathogenic bacteria (e.g., Salmonella, Campylobacter).
- Parasites (e.g., Giardia, Cryptosporidium).
- Viral pathogens (e.g., norovirus, adenovirus).
- Commensal (normal) bacterial flora.
- Opportunistic bacteria and microbes.
- Fungi and yeasts (e.g., Candida species).
- Helicobacter pylori and virulence factors.
Functional Markers
- Digestive health markers (e.g., elastase-1, steatocrit).
- Immune response (SIgA, anti-gliadin SIgA).
- Inflammation (calprotectin).
- Intestinal markers (ß-Glucuronidase, occult blood).
- Optional antibiotic resistance gene profiling.
Why The GI-MAP™ Test Is Useful?
The GI-MAP™ test provides a quantitative picture of gut microbes. It not only detects which organisms are present but also how much of each is there. This information can help to:
- Identify potential gut infections or dysbiosis.
- Assess microbial imbalance linked to digestive symptoms.
- Support planning of personalised gut health interventions
- Monitor changes in the microbiome over time with follow-up testing.
Gut health influences digestion, immune function, inflammation, and overall well-being. This test offers valuable insight that many conventional stool tests do not capture.
Who Might Benefit From GI-MAP™ Testing?
The GI-MAP™ test can be especially informative for individuals experiencing symptoms such as:
- Persistent bloating, gas, diarrhoea or constipation.
- Unexplained fatigue or immune changes.
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms.
- Recurrent yeast or parasitic issues.
- Skin conditions linked to gut health.
- Autoimmune or inflammatory concerns.
- Mood or brain fog potentially linked to gut dysbiosis.
Your practitioner uses these results, along with your health history, symptoms, and other tests, to develop targeted strategies to support digestive balance and overall health.
How The GI-MAP™ Test Works?
1. At-Home Stool Collection
You collect a stool sample at home using the kit provided.
2. Lab Analysis Using qPCR Technology
The sample is analysed in a specialised laboratory. qPCR enables highly sensitive, quantitative detection of microbial DNA.
3. Results & Interpretation
Results are reviewed by your practitioner in context with your health history and goals.
4. Personalised Action Plan
Based on the findings, targeted recommendations may include dietary changes, supplements, lifestyle modifications, or further testing.
Important Disclaimer
The GI-MAP™ test is NOT diagnostic. It is a functional laboratory tool that provides detailed information about your gut microbiome and digestive function, but does not replace medical diagnosis or evaluation by a qualified healthcare provider.
