The omnipresence of technology, especially the internet, social media platforms, and smartphone apps, has transformed daily life and communication. However, mental health counsellors today often encounter clients facing issues directly or indirectly linked to digital media use. According to Dr Igor Pantic, in his literature review “Online Social Networking and Mental Health”, the internet and social media significantly impact mental health. However, the relationship is complex and still being explored.
The Influence of Technology on Mental Health
Recent studies have highlighted significant associations between the frequent use of social media and various mental health challenges, such as heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and diminished self-esteem.
Researchers have observed a pattern where excessive social media consumption correlates with feelings of isolation, envy, and discontentment with one’s own life, as individuals frequently engage in unfavourable self-comparisons with others in their social networks. The constant exposure to meticulously curated images and carefully crafted status updates has the potential to fuel unrealistic expectations and societal pressures, thus compounding mental health struggles.
This connection underscores the importance of being mindful of our social media habits and finding a healthy balance in our usage to safeguard our overall well-being.
Key Message
While technology, particularly social media, has transformed communication and daily life, it also poses significant mental health challenges. Excessive social media use is linked to increased anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem due to constant comparisons and unrealistic expectations. Therefore, it’s crucial to be mindful of social media habits and strive for a healthy balance to protect overall well-being.
